RealClear Summary

Acer's Aspire S5 joings the growing throng of Ultrabooks clamoring to take a bite out of Apple's MacBook Air dominance. The 13-inch S5 does deliver a form factor that's lighter and thinner than the 13-inch MacBook Air plus it incorporates Thunderbolt, the new connectivity standard for computer peripherals. You'll also find Intel's third generation Core i7 processor (2.6GHz dual core), 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD drive.

The S5 offers a unique design touch: a MagicFlip port that flips open to reveal USB, HDMI and Thunderport outputs.

At $1,399, though, the S5 is far from inexpensive and as such has to meet some pretty high standards. The early reviews indicate that it didn't quite measure up.

Drawbacks Hold Back This Ultrabook
The Acer Aspire S5 is a superthin Ultrabook with record-breakingly fast dual SSDs, but a dull screen and short battery life hold it back.

Fun to Use But Needs Fixing
